Swift, Currie, McGhee & Hiers, LLP, is pleased to announce Carl “Trey” K. Dowdey, III^[1], has been selected to take over command of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 10^th Legal Operations Detachment, which falls under the U.S. Army Reserve Legal Command out of Gaithersburg, Maryland. Dowdey’s appointment will take effect on June 22, 2019, and will make him one of just 23 Legal Operations Detachment commanders nationwide. In addition to this announcement, Dowdey will also be promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps.“Trey’s commitment to service on behalf of his country, as well as his clients and community, is an inspiration to those of us who have the opportunity to work with him,” said Terry O. The U.S. Army JAG Corps includes judge advocates, who are licensed attorneys qualified to represent the Army and soldiers in military legal matters. Judge advocates also represent the Army or soldiers during courts-martial, as well as matters involving various adverse administrative and disciplinary matters, legal assistance, civil litigation, tort claims, labor law and international law.

Dowdey has spent more than 20 years in service of his country. He was on active duty from 1998 until 2002 and was mobilized on active duty from 2007 through 2008. Prior to his recent promotion to colonel, Dowdey served as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve JAG Corps, and he was selected to serve as staff judge advocate for the 412^th Theater Engineer Command, a two-star command with approximately 12,000 soldiers in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was previously the staff judge advocate at the 87^th U.S. Army Reserve Support Command (East). He also served as the command judge advocate for the Deployment Support Command, which provides transportation and logistical support for deployed soldiers overseas. He is an active member of the Military Law Committee within the Alabama State Bar.
